Glossaries Glossary - Baseline to Burn down

Contains two glossaries of commonly-used terms. Select each letter for that part of the glossary.

Systems Engineering Glossary

Contains a list of the terminology used in requirements management, systems engineering and V&V (validation and verification), including terms used in model-based systems engineering (MBSE). The definitions of some of these terms are often the subject of debate. These are our definitions. If you disagree with any of them, please contact us to discuss! This list is not exhaustive.

Baseline

A mechanism in Configuration Management Systems to protect formally reviewed and approved information from modification. It is a named repository for the definitive state of a system at a specific point in time to which only read-only access is permitted. A succession of baselines are created over the life of a project, each containing information from an increasing subset of the phases in a project.

Baseline Mode

The Baseline Mode option provides visibility of baselined data (particularly cross references) so you can see the state of the project as it was when it was baselined. This assists traceability as it is possible to easily identify a baseline where a particular activity has occurred, e.g. creating or deleting a cross reference.

Behaviour Diagram

Extended Functional Flow Block Diagram (eFFBD) is a diagram notation that allows you to show the interaction between system functions by distributing them along a timeline. A timeline consists of a set of directed arrows, connecting functions and nodes to depict a processing sequence.

Binary Frame

Any frame whose frame type indicates that the frame does not contain text.

Bitfield

The idea of bitfields is that a high-level data definition represents a message sent between parts of a system. This message contains pieces of data which are represented by other data definitions, which in turn may be defined by other data definitions and so on in a hierarchy. To create the message to be sent, all the pieces of data must be packed into one or more sequences of bits, called words. The message is therefore a sequence of words. The bitfield shows how the pieces of data in the message are packed into words that form the message.

Block Definition Diagram - SysML

Used to define the structural aspect of the system under development and shows component parts (i.e. blocks) that should exist in the system level by level down the system hierarchy and relevant properties and interfaces of each component part.

Branch

Some diagram types are time-sequenced, in which functions or operations are distributed along a timeline. The timeline can be branched and sub-branched using parallel, option and iteration constructs that are indicated by nodes (small circles) labelled AND, OR, I and R.

Burn Down Chart

A graph which starts at 100% of the inverse of the goal and falls over time to reach the goal, termed a burn-down graph.
